St. John’s UCC started in the town of Boomerang,
ID, later to be named Payette in a small Presbyterian church in 1905.
In 1908, the St. John’s German Lutheran Church of Payette, Idaho was
incorporated. After obtaining $1500 for a lot and building, the
current building was built and dedicated in November, 1911. St.
John’s has been a church of change, first merging with the Evangelical
Church and later with the Reformed church. St. John’s is the only
church in the Idaho association from the E&R heritage. In 1957,
St. John’s enthusiastically became part of the newly formed United
Church of Christ.
St. John’s extends God’s most extravagant welcome
to all, celebrating every service with a potluck afterwards – a
tradition that was started with the first meeting to form a church in
1905. Recently, the church was given a Kimball organ by a person
who heard the church had no working organ. The Comforting
Quilters, the women’s quilting group, meets on Tuesday afternoons each
week. This is a time of making quilts, which the church gives away
to needy children and families each year. The group also serves as the
women’s fellowship group. Learn more about St. John’s rich history
