Nobel Laureate F.W. De Klerk will speak about his work to engineer an end to apartheid, South Africa’s racial segregation policy, and the lessons he learned about contemporary peace today. He will speak in back-to-back events February 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Portland, and at a fundraising dinner for the Wholistic Peace Institute (WPI) from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the downtown Hilton Hotel, 921 SW 6th Avenue.

De Klerk was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 along with Nelson Mandela. As president of South Africa De Klerk freed Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990, and the two men worked closely together to transform of the country into a multiracial democracy, end apartheid and establish a new constitution. De Klerk has also been recognized for his decision to eliminate South Africa’s nuclear arsenal. South Africa is the only country in history to take this step toward peace.

Waverly Heights UCC Church Hosts Benefit Gospel Concert as part of its Spring Concert Series

La Rhonda SteeleVocalist, La Rhonda Steele, Portland-based Blues, R&B, and Gospel artist, leads an all-star cast of singers and musicians. They will present an exciting and uplifting Gospel Music Concert at 4pm on Sunday, March 25th at the church, 3300 SE Woodward St. The music celebrates the diversity of music and cultures, and invites joyous audience participation. Singers also include Marietta-Collier Wells, Ron Shoals, and Arietta Ward.

They will be accompanied by celebrated, Grammy nominated, Blues/Gospel pianist, Janice Scroggins, bassist, Ben Jones, drummer, Tyrone Hendrix, famed Blues/Jazz saxophonist Renato Caranto, Oregon Music Hall of Fame Inductees, "Boogie Cat" Blues guitarist, Norman Sylvester, and Obo Addy, Master Drummer from Ghana, East Africa.

Waverly Heights United Church of Christ is an "Open and Affirming, Just Peace" Congregation, celebrating their 100th anniversary. The church is completely ADA accessible. Ramp and Lift and ADA approved restrooms. Free, off street parking.

All interested Youth and Youth Leaders – we are putting together a delegation from the Central Pacific Conference and we would love to have as many churches represented as possible! The National Youth Event is for youth aged 13 to 18 and is July 10-13, 2012; at Purdue University in Indiana. It is an AMAZING event for youth from all over the United States to gather for worship, workshops, faith, fun and fellowship! Registration for the event is $425 (includes food and lodging) and we are working on air fare costs. If you have an interest, a question – anything at all – please contact Kristina Martin at Vancouver UCC (Kristina@vanucc.org) or Audrey Ouellette at Forest Grove UCC (Audrey@fgucc.org) to see how we can get your kids to NYE!

The need for healing in today's world is great: our personal lives, families, relationships, communities and our world, are all areas in need of healing. The Fourth Friday Labyrinth Walks are an opportunity to open channels for healing. Each month the theme will vary somewhat and guidance will always be provided. These meditative and contemplative sessions are open to all and there is no charge. This is a ministry of the Beavercreek UCC.
