Resolution of the Central Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ Condemning Political Corruption in the 47th Presidency of the United States of America

RESOLUTION OF THE CENTRAL PACIFIC CONFERENCE OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST CONDEMNING POLITICAL CORRUPTION IN THE 47TH PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

August 25, 2026

Proposed by the Justice and Witness Ministry Team (JWMT-CPC)

The Central Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ proclaims a call to serve as a prophetic voice for our communities, our nation, and our larger world. We are committed to fair and just treatment of all people and our planet, and we strive to create a loving community for all our siblings in the name of Jesus Christ.

In keeping with our values and our traditions of serving as a bold witness in testimony for just peace for all creation, we make the following resolution:

WHEREAS: Prophetic witness is unambiguous in its concern for justice and integrity. The prophets condemn rulers who distort truth, oppress the poor, and treat public office as a tool for personal gain. Christians cannot be indifferent when dishonesty, cruelty, contempt for accountability, or patterns of corruption are normalized among those entrusted with authority. To remain silent in the face of such wrongdoing is to neglect the demands of conscience and the call to love our neighbors as ourselves. (Mark 12:31) and;

WHEREAS: As prophetic voices, many groups and leaders within our denomination have called out specific examples of egregiously unjust policies and actions taken by our current United States federal political leadership that threaten our communal wellbeing; and;

WHEREAS: We endorse these efforts and raise further concerns about the acts of profiteering and corruption that characterize the leadership of this administration as cited below, and;

WHEREAS: Political corruption despoils the whole notion of governance. It damages the capacity for government to serve the public interest, diverts resources away from necessary protections for the poor and the planet, controls and weaponizes public and private communications systems to mass mediate false information, foments conflict, and damages the foundations of justice.

THEREFORE: As followers of a faith tradition committed to the ideals of peace and justice and devoted to the practice of the public good, we take inspiration from our prophetic tradition to name and condemn the political corruption practiced through many acts of this administration including the following: solicitation of gifts from foreign interests, improper use of the office of the Presidential Office in name, image and licensing products to generate personal income, gutting the merit-based pardon system in favor of a network access system that prioritizes the wealthy, and many other actions that characterize the leadership of the administration of the 47th presidency. We call for investigation, repentance, and resignation of those found guilty of crimes against our national interest.

THEREFORE: We call for genuine accountability for those who wield power. We reject the false belief that political success excuses moral failure. Christian faith requires discernment, courage, and a willingness to name sin honestly, even when doing so is costly (Ephesians 5:11).

THEREFORE: We invite all congregations, conferences, and denominational bodies to denounce this presidential administration’s ongoing corrupt practices and embrace the prayerful practice of prophetic imagination to thoughtfully and hopefully cultivate governance and leadership models that promote the inherent dignity of all created beings. We declare that the age of unmitigated capitalist exploitation which fosters deception and exploitation must end in favor of an era embracing the truth and necessity of our mutual interdependence in all arenas.

FURTHERMORE: We offer this resolution as an act of public witness and an invitation for prayerful discussion and action. As we draw attention to corruption at the highest levels of government, it is incumbent upon all of us to decry corruption in every institution in which we find ourselves a part (including our local churches and civic institutions), such that we will rise in ways that refuse to succumb to the narrative of despair, help us each to find our courage, and raise our voices for greater truth and accountability.

FINALLY: We pray for all our leaders to act with wisdom and integrity for communities to resist cynicism and fear, and for the Church to remain steadfast in its calling to "do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly" with God (Micah 6:8). May our public witness bear fruits of justice, mercy, and truth in all our days to come.

Adopted by the Assembly of the Central Pacific Conference United Church of Christ on October 4, 2026.
